The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services on Tuesday opened a new round of bidding for its Medicare Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics and Supplies Competitive Bidding Program, which allows suppliers to negotiate new pricing levels Medicare pays for medical supplies.

The program, which the feds say replaces outdated pricing schedules, works to ensure the federal government doesn't pay more than market rate for supplies including walkers and wheelchairs.

The program saved $580 million in nine markets in the first round of bidding, which ended in 2013, and an additional $2 billion in the second round, which ended in July 2014.

The program, part of the Affordable Care Act, mandates at least one new round of bidding every three years.
