Obamacare signups top 11.4 million, blow past goal
"The Affordable Care Act is working ... it's working a little bit better than we anticipated," President Obama said.
Signups for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, topped 11.4 million in the 2014-2015 enrollment period, President Barack Obama announced in a video posted on Facebook Tuesday night.
Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell, who appeared in the video briefing the president on the enrollment numbers, had set a goal of 11.2 million signups.
Burwell, in the video, said this year more people signed up in the last day of enrollment than any other day before.
"The Affordable Care Act is working ... it's working a little bit better than we anticipated," President Obama said.
"This kind of outreach at a grassroots level in combination with the very real competition and the numbers of insurers that are going into markets that were previously under-served which is driving down prices and improving quality, this really was the original dream for the Affordable Care Act," he said.
This year's enrollment officially ended on Sunday, but applicants who are still in the process of enrolling will be allowed to finish their enrollments.
