More than 1,300 healthcare providers operate on the edge of the U.S. healthcare system. They are critical access hospitals, small facilities that have fewer than 25 beds and are often in remote, rural areas and provide needed care to smaller populations.

In fact, guidelines from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services mandate critical hospitals be no more than 35 miles from another hospital (or 15 miles in mountainous areas. Other criteria include offering beds for swing-bed services that provide seniors with skilled nursing care for conditions like stroke, Parkinson’s disease or infections.

In fact, 45 rural hospitals are in danger of losing their critical access designation in 2016 as their rural nature is being debated as possibly being considered urban.

To help you better see where these hospitals are located, and where they are not, we’ve compiled this map and database using information supplied by CMS. The size of the markers on the map correspond with the number of beds each has. We’ve also included information on when each facility was certified.
