While participation in a accountable care organization model by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services can yield big savings (or fines) based on the quality of care, most ACO managers know what defines "quality" is anything but simple.

In fact, CMS requires reporting in 33 separate benchmarks, ranging from basic measures like providing clear access to specialists to more targeted issues like blood pressure levels in beneficiaries with hypertension. According to CMS, the benchmarks are broken into four categories: patient/caregiver experience, care coordination/patient safety, preventive health, and at-risk population.

While more than 50 ACOs that participated in the Medicare Shared Savings Program ACO reaped millions in savings, when looking at the data it's clear some organizations did better than others when it come to each specific ACO benchmark. To illustrate that, Healthcare Finance has pulled out the top 10 MSSP ACOs by quality scores for each individual ACO benchmark based on 2013 results. We used CMS data, provided to us by ACO performance tracker PulsePilot.
