In 2011, this 25-bed mountain ranch-style facility was named one of the top 100 critical access hospitals in the country. Today, it serves approximately 7,000 people in a county known for beautiful views of lakes and rolling foothills.

19. CaroMont Health, Gastonia, N.C.

Recently named one of Thomson Reuters' Top 100 Hospitals, CaroMont Health offers top-notch facilities outfitted with the latest advancements in medical technology.

18. Sacred Heart Medical Center at Riverbend, Springfield, Ore.

A classic-look clock tower outside gives way to a grand foyer with a soaring stone fireplace and hefty exposed wooden beams inside, recreating with modern civility the rugged feel of the American frontier.

17. Metro Health Hospital - Wyoming, Wyoming, Mich.

With contemporary design and zone-specific lighting that can be adjusted for individual patient needs, this 208-bed acute care facility has a Silver LEED certification for sustainable building and operation.

16. Mercy Memorial Hospital, Monroe, Mich.

Architects Hobbs + Black replaced an aging c.1929 structure with the modern, curving lines of this multi-award-winning facility, which ranked among the top 12 percent in America for customer satisfaction in 2010.

15. Huntsman Cancer Institute, Salt Lake City

Located at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, the Huntsman Cancer Institute's research and hospital buildings are more reminiscent of a grand hotel – providing patients a comforting and inviting atmosphere.

14. Riverside Regional Medical Center, Newport News, Va.

The main entrance and lobby of Riverside Regional Medical Center are excellent examples of the most recent hospital architectural thinking. The center is the Virginia Peninsula's most comprehensive medical facility, combining the most recent computerized medical technology with a healing environment.

13. Gulf Coast Medical Center, Fort Myers, Fla.

This 350-bed facility has 43 emergency beds, 28 exam rooms, 22 ORs, 10 observation units and five trauma rooms amid high-ceilinged, palm tree-filled hallways, all with extensive water features incorporated into the exterior architecture.

12. Virtua Voorhees Hospital, Voorhees Township, N.J.

All aspects of this hospital were designed with the comfort and well-being of patients and their families in mind, with healing environments that combine elements of natural light, healing gardens, walking paths and meditation spaces.

11. Norton Sound Regional Hospital, Nome, Alaska

Having just opened in January 2013, the new Norton Sound Regional Hospital is three times the size of the old building, and features equipment with the latest technology.

10. Eisenhower Medical Center, Rancho Mirage, Calif.

With patient rooms that could stand in for boutique retail store spaces and central pavilions with refined color palettes, Renaissance-based art through the halls completes the creation of a modern piazza feel.

9. McKay-Dee Hospital Center, Ogden, Utah

Utah's McKay-Dee Hospital boasts beauty in its symmetry, as well as its natural surroundings. Building and nature work together to create an uplifting space.

8. Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital, Wheaton, Ill.

Built in 2006, Marianjoy's 60-acre Rehabilitation Hospital has 120 private rooms, and provides patients with features specifically designed to enhance medical treatment and the healing environment.

7. West Kendall Baptist Hospital, Miami, Fla.

First opening its doors in April 2011, West Kendall Baptist Hospital represents the first completely new, non-replacement hospital built in Miami in more than 35 years. It is expected to receive 40,000 emergency room visits annually.

6. Doctors Memorial Hospital, Bonifay, Fla.

This 2008 rebuild of its 1950s-era namesake was ahead of its time logistically, having implemented a fully-certified EHR system.

5. Einstein Medical Center Montgomery, East Norriton, Penn.

Einstein Medical Center Montgomery features natural hardwood floors and furniture in contemporary-designed rooms, which are complimented by a five-story, all-glass atrium as well as designer common and eating spaces.

4. Stony Brook University Hospital, Stony Brook, N.Y.

Stony Brook University Hospital's architecture features surprising and perplexing attributes, including multiple towers spanned by several bridges serving both functional needs and aesthetics.

3. Cass Regional Medical Center, Harrisonville, Mo.

Designed by Hoefer Wysocki Architecture, Cass Regional Medical Center was built from natural stone, wood and metal to create one of America's best-looking medical institutions.

2. Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, Elmhurst, Ill.

Elmhurst Memorial maintains its stylish looks and comforting feel. It is home to 259 private inpatient suites in an aesthetically pleasing, easy-to-navigate environment.

1. LeConte Medical Center, Sevierville, Tenn.

This $115 million rock and stone lodge was built in 2010 as a replacement hospital in one of East Tennessee's fastest-growing communities. Sevier County raised over $10 million to support the building, which has 80 patient rooms, four ORs, the county's first cancer survival center and the state-of-the-art Dolly Parton Center for Women's Services.
