BayCare is a not-for-profit healthcare system of 15 hospitals and other care facilities throughout Tampa Bay and central Florida. It applied to the state last fall to operate a Medicare Advantage plan for a fully-integrated provider and payer network.

It plans to offer MA in four Florida counties.

"Adding insurance will encourage our providers to focus on wellness and caring for patients, not just when they are sick but 365 days a year," said Jim Beermann, president of BayCare Select Health Plans.

Lumeris will work on building a broader network of physicians and hospitals outside of the BayCare system for future Medicare Advantage plan members.

"We will build on BayCare's strong relationships with its physicians and its ties to the community to help the health system and other providers in its integrated network make the transition to value-based care, while improving the health of seniors across the Tampa Bay area," said Mike Long, chairman and CEO of Lumeris.

BayCare said it selected Lumeris based on its 10 years of experience working with providers on value-based care strategies, including in Medicare Advantage plans.

"BayCare selected Lumeris as its partner because of our proven methodology and our understanding of how to align provider and payer incentives," said Ross Armstrong, Lumeris' senior vice president for the region.
