The Cleveland Clinic has broken ground on a new training center for the Cleveland Cavaliers that will double as a care center for the general public, which the health system said will be "one of the largest and most advanced training and performance complexes in the world."

In partnership with Bedrock Real Estate, the complex, designed by Populous, is also the first vertical development in Bedrock's $3.5 billion Cuyahoga Riverfront Master Plan.

At the same time ground was broken, Cleveland Clinic and the Cavaliers announced a 25-year extension of a partnership that began in 1993. This, they said, will create one of the longest continuous relationships between a professional sports organization and a medical provider.

WHAT'S THE IMPACT?

Cavaliers players will have access to a facility designed to optimize their athletic performance and overall wellbeing, said Cleveland Clinic. The center will feature advanced technology and equipment, biomechanical testing systems, high-tech training equipment with integrated data analytics, virtual reality and simulation technology for skill development, and wearable sensors for real-time performance monitoring.

The center will also offer comprehensive care for the general public, including athletes of all sports and levels. The care, the system said, will be personalized to the individual and informed by data inputs from one of the largest sports health data hubs.

The interdisciplinary center will provide access to high-tech testing and training equipment and expert professionals from various specialties, including sports medicine, cardiology, pulmonology, exercise physiology, neurology, nutrition, psychology and genetics.

"Together, we are building a facility that will redefine the standards of performance and wellness," said Dr. Tom Mihaljevic, CEO and president of Cleveland Clinic and the holder of the Morton L. Mandel CEO Chair. "This center will serve not only elite athletes but also individuals from all walks of life, reflecting our shared commitment to health, innovation and community development. Our partnership strengthens Cleveland's position as a leader in both healthcare and sports excellence."

THE LARGER TREND

In addition to sports medicine, Cleveland Clinic is also expanding an initiative focusing on the safety and quality of care between caregivers and pregnant patients.

Citing higher patient satisfaction and a reduction in Cesarean section rates, Cleveland Clinic plans to expand the TeamBirth model to three additional hospitals, touting 100% satisfaction rates in areas such as friendliness, nurse promptness, and the doctor and staff working together during birth.
