Geisinger is partnering for an AI platform to better manage operating room time and staffing.
The AI platform by partner Optmed.ai analyzes billions of logistical data points to manage OR workflow. This allows for more clinical procedures, which boosts revenue.
It's being used at Geisinger's 10 hospital campuses.
WHY THIS MATTERS
The platform uses network science and advanced algorithms to enhance resource utilization, minimize downtime and build resilient OR schedules, according to Optmed.ai.
Key features include predictive intelligence for accurate case duration predictions, integration with existing systems, and customization based on specific constraints and preferences.
The platform analyzes historical data on previous OR cases and surgery blocks to predict case lengths and identify scheduling gaps to create small adjustments to avoid delays.
By analyzing patient flow, staff can shift scheduling blocks across multiple locations.
The AI platform optimizes staff scheduling by predicting demand.
Jeffrey Adams, Geisinger's chief administrative officer for surgical and medical services, said: "Opmed.ai's advanced platform aligns with our mission to make healthcare more accessible and efficient. We're already seeing first results and are confident this technology will help us maximize our OR capacity and accelerate patient care."
THE LARGER TREND
In March, Geisinger became the first member of Risant Health, a new nonprofit charitable organization created to expand and accelerate value-based care across the country.
Geisinger serves 1.2 million people in urban and rural communities across Pennsylvania. The nonprofit system generates $10 billion in annual revenues across 126 care sites – including 10 hospital campuses.
Geisinger Health Plan has more than half a million members in commercial and government plans.
