New Jersey-based Hackensack University Medical Center has struck a deal with popular taxi service Uber to provide and help pay for transportation for its patients, staff and visitors.

Hackensack said the arrangement will improve the discharge process and help out patients who otherwise struggle to find or afford transportation.

Under terms of the deal, both Hackensack and Uber will make changes to their mobile apps. On Uber's side, its app will add a feature that allows patients to share what pick-up zone they are in at the 755-bed medical center. Meanwhile, Hackesack's app will feature reminders about its Uber services and Hackensack's website will add a page for requesting Uber rides.

Hackensack said it will also launch an education campaign to make patients aware of the new partnership with Uber.

This is the second deal that Uber, perhaps one of the hottest companies on the globe, has struck with a healthcare provider in 2016. The billion-dollar company in January said it was partnering with Maryland-based MedStar Health in a very similar way. However, that deal did not include any changes to Uber's app and instead featured a Ride with Uber option on the health system's website.

"HackensackUMC is taking a bold step to ensure that everyone has a safe, reliable way to get home following their medical visit," Ana Mahony, general manager for Uber New Jersey, said in a statement, adding that Uber has also partnered with local governments in the state.
