AHIP's board of directors has elected HighMark Health President and CEO David Holmberg its new board chair, effective January 1, 2022. Holmberg will take the helm from Bruce Broussard, president and CEO of Humana, who is serving as AHIP board chair through the end of the year.

At the helm of Highmark, Holmberg leads a $21 billion health insurance provider and regional hospital and physician network.

AHIP credited Holmberg with using that role to improve affordability, access and value, including improving patient experience, introducing innovation that improves both the patient and consumer experience, and collaborating across the industry to align incentives.

Holmberg joined Highmark in 2007 and served in a series of executive positions, including president of its Diversified Businesses, where he was responsible for businesses representing more than $3.5 billion in revenue. He was also CEO of HVHC Inc. and CEO and chairman for HM Insurance Group, United Concordia Dental and San Antonio, Texas-based Visionworks, which was divested in 2016 for $1.6 billion.

The AHIP board is also welcoming two new members, Point32Health President and CEO Cain Hayes and CareOregon President and CEO Eric Hunter.

THE LARGER TREND

Highmark Health announced in July the launch of Lumevity, a wholly owned subsidiary that offers consulting services to other businesses to help them achieve large-scale transformation. Lumevity is a mixture of digital solutions, such as the automation of repetitive tasks and human resource engagement strategies that aim to engage employees toward a community mindset around transformation and the adoption of organizational effectiveness.

Delivering opening remarks during the AHIP 2021 National Conference in September, AHIP President and CEO Matt Eyles called for strengthening and protecting Medicare Advantage as well as Medicaid Managed Care, calling the programs "efficient, effective and popular."

ON THE RECORD

"Americans are clear: They are looking for collaboration across health care for better experiences, better outcomes and lower costs," said Holmberg. "AHIP is committed to solutions that increase value, improve equity and result in better overall health. I am looking forward to engaging as board chair as we look ahead to 2022."

"When patients have more control over their coverage and care choices, they are better able to get what they need, when they need it, at a price they can afford," said Matt Eyles, AHIP President and CEO. "We greatly appreciate Bruce's leadership through the continuing COVID-19 pandemic as we continued to deliver on our vision to guide greater health for Americans. We are very excited to have David as next year's chair as we continue to advocate for competitive, private-market solutions to improve health care for everyone that health insurance providers serve."
