NYU Lutheran Medical Center gets $25 million from Bezos Family Foundation, renames hospital
Hospital will now be known as NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn, the system said.
NYU Lutheran Medical Center has formally announced a new name and a $25 million gift from the Bezos Family Foundation. The hospital will now be known as NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn following the rebranding of the entire institution as NYU Langone Health, the system announced.
The pledged gift will fuel efforts to help mothers, children, and families in the Brooklyn community, and will provide funding for critical new positions and initiatives to enhance care across the institution, especially during the critical first years of a child's life. Additionally, the money will enact a partnership between the Departments of Population Health and Obstetrics and Gynecology to develop and track family and community well-being metrics, including physical health, school readiness, economic stability, and other daily issues that impact overall family health, NYU Langone Health said.
The Bezos' gift will support several other efforts as well. First, the hospital will look to established multi-year programs to support overall family health and child development for babies born there. Additional resources like parenting groups and early childhood development experts who are in tune with the diverse population could be implemented in coming years. Another effort involves ongoing care for families after they leave the hospital, like help from community health workers and guidance in finding and using community resources. The funds will also help support research in achieving optimal health outcomes based on social and cultural norms, and bolster staff training focused on children, families, and caregivers between NYU Langone Hospital – Brooklyn and other NYU Langone facilities.

Finally, a professorship will be created in order to institute a mission for long-term care strategies, as well as oversight that connects departments and helps create, support, and measure the impact of new initiatives.
"When we first visited NYU Langone Hospital – Brooklyn, we realized why it has been a beacon for Sunset Park and the surrounding community for more than 100 years," said Jackie Bezos, president of the Bezos Family Foundation.
"This is a significant step forward for our medical center, which has made considerable changes and improvements to better help patients and communities across Brooklyn," said Bret J. Rudy, MD, executive hospital director, and senior vice president, NYU Langone Hospital – Brooklyn.
