Optum is laying off 524 employees in California jobs, according to a required filing in that state through the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act.

Optum submitted the list of layoffs and permanent closures on July 18.

There are 221 permanent layoffs in Los Angeles County, with 64 in Segundo, and 157 in Cerritos.mIn San Bernardino County, a permanent closure is affecting 71 employees in Redlands and Highland. In Riverside County, 23 employees are affected by a permanent closure in Beaumont.

In Orange County, 12 are affected by a permanent closure, another 194 in Los Angeles County and three in Alameda County.

All have an effective date on September 16.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Many of the layoffs are at urgent care facilities, according to a letter Optum submitted to the Employment Development Department that was posted through SiliconValley.com.

Optum did not provide a reason for the job cuts in its letter.

"We continually review the capabilities and services we offer to meet the growing and evolving needs of our businesses and the people we serve. As always, we will support affected team members with job placement resources and seek to deploy them where possible to any open roles within the company," Optum said by statement.

Of the 524 employees affected, 161 work remotely outside the state.

The layoffs will be in eight waves, the letter states, beginning on September16 and concluding in January 2025.

THE LARGER TREND

Optum has more than 9,116 job openings across the country with many available telecommuting or work from home, according to the company. This includes open positions in California.

Optum said it employs more than 20,100 people in California and work with more than 140,000 provider partners across the state.
