OptumCare has acquired the Reliant Medical Group in Massachusetts, the latest example of a UnitedHealth Group division buying a provider.

Reliant became part of OptumCare, the healthcare delivery arm of Optum, on April 1, according to Reliant.

The deal, announced last year, was worth $28 million, according to the Worcester Telegram.

Reliant will remain locally operated and told patients they would see no changes in care, but it would no longer be a tax-exempt charitable organization.

Optum will give the provider access to new resources and healthcare expertise, said Tarek Elsawy, MD, president and CEO.

Reliant was suffered from shrinking profit margins and went looking for a buyer in a field that was narrowed to Optum, Harvard Pilgrim and UMass Memorial Health Care, with the latter two eventually dropping out, according to the Worcester Telegram report.

Optum, UnitedHealth Group's health services business, recently acquired Surgical Care Affiliates and the DaVita Medical Group.
