NCQA has extended the deadline for HEDIS MY 2023 submission to 5 p.m., June 28, due to the Change Healthcare cyberattack. The extension represents an additional two weeks to report 2023 HEDIS results.

The move is being done in alliance with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. CMS contracts with NCQA to collect Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) measures that are used in the calculation for Medicare Advantage star ratings. MA plan payment is tied to star rating performance.

HEDIS measures track performance on key aspects of care and service. NCQA collects HEDIS data from health plans, healthcare organizations and government agencies.

The Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set is a tool used by the majority of health plans.

WHY THIS MATTERS

"The extension recognizes the disruption of the Change Healthcare cyberattack on quality reporting efforts," said the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA).

This extension is intended to support all healthcare operations by providing the additional time needed to compile and submit accurate data, NCQA said.

"We believe that this is necessary to ensure the integrity of HEDIS results, alleviate some of the pressures experienced by those handling submissions, and help ensure that quality healthcare remains our shared focus," the organization said.

THE LARGER TREND

NCQA is a nonprofit organization that supports CMS in collecting HEDIS measures from Medicare Special Need Plans. NCQA also supports the implementation of the HEDIS Medicare Health Outcomes Survey and the Medicare Health Outcomes Survey.

CMS contracts with NCQA to collect the measures. The HEDIS measurement set is sponsored, supported and maintained by NCQA.
