Many of the 21 ACOs that joined the Next Gen program essentially defected from the Pioneer model.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services on Tuesday announced the launch of the Next Generation accountable care model, a new risk-based payment program that gives participating ACOs the ability to realize the highest incentives based on quality and spending benchmarks. Next Generation joins the Pioneer ACO and the Medicare Shared Savings ACO models as the three accountable care innovation models supported by CMS. The federal agaency has said these programs will help the sector move more quickly towards value-based reimbursement.

But many of the 21 ACOs that joined the Next Generation ACO program essentially defected from the Pioneer program, which had been plagued with drop-outs over penalties tied to benchmarks many thought were too high. With Tuesday's announcment, only nine ACOs remain in the Pioneer program.
