Dr. Darshak Sanghavi, a member of the Obama administration and global chief medical officer at Babylon, has experience in the private sector and with the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation. At the CMS Innovation Center, Sanghavi became the first permanent director of Prevention and Population Health working on different models aimed at improving the quality and cost of care nationwide.

As global CMO at digital healthcare company Babylon, Sanghavi recently spent time in Rwanda where the company initiated a digital platform allowing for one million consultations by cellphone.

Sanghavi spoke to Healthcare Finance News' Executive Editor Susan Morse,  comparing U.S. healthcare to the rest of the world. Hear his conversation on what's needed to make healthcare both more accessible and affordable.

Talking Points:

  • Healthcare costs in the United States are much higher than anywhere else.
  • The U.S. has problems with the volume of care delivered and does too much low-value care.
  • The United States is a good place for healthcare if you have good health insurance.
  • The United Kingdom has better access to care and better life expectancy. The U.S. is better for specialized care.
  • New technology can drive a lot of spend.
  • Bringing down the high cost of healthcare requires better pricing and perhaps an all-payer rate setting, as was tested in Maryland.
  • Value-based care is important for a physician to manage patients' care even when they're not in front of them.
  • Digital health allows access to care more quickly.
