CMS released ratings on close to 4,000 Medicare-eligible hospitals, and the vast majority scored either three of four stars.
Only 168 hospitals in the United States earned five stars in the latest Hospital Compare ratings from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, according to new data released last week.
On the other hand, 65 hospitals earned just one star, the data show.
The Hospital Compare ratings are based on patient answers to Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems surveys, which they receive after any hospital stays. Through series of questions about care and service, the surveys help CMS form a picture of the experience patients receive at these facilities by coming up with a summary star rating based on the answers.
CMS had planned to release a new star ratings program, which factored in more than HCAHPS scores, but officials have delayed that program as a result of mounting political pressure. Opponents of the new ratings include 60 senators and 225 members of the House of Representatives who signed letters asking for the delay.

The recent star ratings are based on patient survey results between July 1, 2014 and June 30, 2015.
CMS released ratings on close to 4,000 Medicare-eligible hospitals, and the vast majority scored either three of four stars.
Poor HCAHPS scores can sting a health system since the government will slash the amount it reimburses the facility under Medicaid based on poor scores.
However, the data suggests hospitals may be improving, since only 155 earned five stars when CMS last released ratings in December 2015.
