Aetna is collaborating with other health plans and local primary care practices in Pennsylvania in providing financial and data support to physicians through the Comprehensive Primary Care + initiative.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Service's CPC+ program unites insurance plans in the tracking and reporting of healthcare quality and improvement data. Aetna, along with other participating plans, will provide physicians with financial support and data feedback.

CPC+ is a five-year model that began this January. It aligns 54 payers  to 2,983 PCPs in 14 regions to help physicians improve the quality of care and reduce the number of unnecessary services their patients receive, according to CMS.

CPC+ expands on the medical home program established by the CMS in 2012.

The five-year primary care medical home model pays practices a per-patient monthly fee in addition to regular Medicare fee-for-service payments. Practices can use those funds to pay for care improvement activities, such as coordinating care with other clinicians.

Additionally, physician participation in Track 2 of CPC+ qualifies them to for the advanced alternative payment model bonus payments worth 5 percent of their total annual payments, under the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act, or MACRA.

"Aetna's Medicare network in southeastern Pennsylvania includes a number of primary care practices that provide care that is consistent with the quality demanded by the CPC+ program. Furthering the number of practices who can achieve those goals and helping our members access this level of care is consistent with our intention to offer Medicare Advantage plans that achieve high quality ratings of 4 stars or better from CMS," said Robert O'Connor, executive director of Aetna Medicare.
