Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price has named Brenda Fitzgerald, a physician and former commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Health, as the new director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Administrator of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, HHS announced Friday.
Fitzgerald, who practiced medicine as an obstetrician-gynecologist for three decades, oversaw various state public health programs and directed Georgia's 18 public health districts and more than 150 county health departments.
She also worked as a health care policy advisor with House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Senator Paul Coverdell. She has served as a Senior Fellow and Chairman of the Board for the Georgia Public Policy Foundation.
Fitzgerald is stepping into a role formerly held by Anne Schuchat, who has worked as the acting CDC Director and ATSDR Administrator since January 20. Schuchat will resume her role as CDC's principal deputy director.
