HCA Healthcare Gulf Coast Division has purchased three acute care hospitals and one long-term acute care hospital from Tenet Healthcare, expanding their footprint in Houston, the company announced Tuesday. There are also plans for additional growth.

The list of their newly acquired hospitals includes Houston Northwest Medical Center, Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital, Park Plaza Hospital and Plaza Specialty Hospital. HCA also bought Tomball Regional Medical Center earlier this year.

"As the competitive healthcare market in Houston has seen changes and transitions in facility ownership, infrastructure and leadership during the last few years, HCA Healthcare has been surveying community needs. The HCA Healthcare Gulf Coast Division is committed to responsible growth in Houston that supports the physician and improves patient outcomes," the system said in a statement.

HCA Healthcare Gulf Coast Division manages 15 community hospitals across the area, as well as three specialty hospitals near the Texas Medical Center, including The Woman's Hospital of Texas, a joint venture with Texas Orthopedic Hospital and Plaza Specialty Hospital. The division also operates ten freestanding emergency centers and nine ambulatory surgical centers.

Merger and acquisition activity is on the rise across the healthcare industry, with nonprofit systems leading the charge. In the second quarter of 2017, according to advisory firm Kaufman Hall, activity rose by 15 percent to 31 transactions from 27 this time last year.

Large-scale transactions with organizations with nearly one billion or more in revenues had six in the first half of the year already. In 2016, only four of these were announced all year long.
