Bon Secours and Mercy Health announce intent to merge
The combined system will have 43 hospitals and $8 billion in net operating revenue.
Bon Secours Health System and Mercy Health have announced an intent to merge, creating one of the largest health systems in the eastern half of the country.
The Catholic Health systems will combine Bon Secours East Coast market and Mercy Health's population in Ohio and Kentucky to create the fifth largest Catholic health system with $8 billion in net operating revenue.
The merger will allow the new entity to leverage economies of scale by integrating resources and teams across the ministries, according to a statement by both systems. It creates the future opportunity to expand the health ministry into complementary service areas across the United States and further alignment within the country and outside of its borders.
Mercy Health and Bon Secours rank in the top performing quartile of Catholic health systems for low cost, high quality patient care, they said.
Together they will serve 10 million patients across seven states at 43 hospitals as well as at other care facilities, home health agencies, hospice agencies, skilled nursing and assisted living facilities.
Bon Secours operates in Maryland, Virginia, South Carolina, Kentucky, Florida and New York, while Mercy operates in Ohio and Kentucky.
No further information was released on an expected closing date, any cost associated with the transaction or any operational changes associated with the merger.
