Amazon hires renowned Massachusetts General cardiologist Maulik Majmudar, MD

Amazon has hired renowned Massachusetts General Hospital cardiologist Maulik Majmudar, MD.
The news was released Monday by a tweet from Majmudar, who said, "Very emotional day … I have decided to leave academia to take on an exciting & challenging role @amazon."
His role at Amazon has not been disclosed, only adding to the speculation of what's happening with the company's healthcare collaboration with Berkshire Hathaway and JPMorgan Chase.
Casey Ross of Stat tweeted that Amazon's latest hire is a master of bringing technology into the clinic.
Majmudar was associate director, Healthcare Transformation Lab at Massachusetts General Hospital and a lecturer at MIT.
"The one and only reason I am taking on this opportunity, is the possibility of making a truly meaningful impact on the health and wellbeing of hundreds of millions of individuals throughout the world …," Majmudar tweeted Monday.
Tech companies hiring cardiologists and physicians is not unusual, according to CNBC. Amazon also recently hired Martin Levine, MD, a primary care expert, and Taha Kass-Hout, MD, the former FDA chief health information officer, the report said.
Amazon's healthcare interests span selling medical supplies, including integrating pharmaceuticals through its recent acquisition of PillPack, and AI capabilities for wellness apps for Alexa.
Rivals Apple, Alphabet and Microsoft are building technology solutions for healthcare. Apple, for instance, is developing custom health information tracking chips.
