Blue Cross Blue Shield launches Blue HPN network

Blue HPN offers, on average, 10% total cost of care savings and up to 16% in some markets.

Blue Cross Blue Shield has announced the launch of its own high performance network called Blue HPN.

Blue HPN will be available to more than 185 million Americans in 55 major markets nationwide, starting in January 2021. It will provide in-network access to a national footprint of providers selected based on BCBS companies' local market expertise, data analytics and strong provider relationships, according to the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association.

WHAT'S THE IMPACT

Blue HPN offers, on average, 10% total cost of care savings and up to 16% in some markets. This is on top of the 5-9% savings already delivered by BCBS companies' broad PPO, BCBSA said.

THE LARGER TREND

In many markets, Blue HPN is building on its patient-focused, value-based care payment programs that are shifting away from fee-for-service payment models, to focus on preventative, coordinated care. Currently more than 70% of BCBS members – more than 74 million – have access to patient-focused care programs.

In another move by a Blue Cross Blue Shield organization, BCBS of Massachusetts announced this week they have added Minneapolis-based Learn to Live – a digital delivery of evidence-based cognitive behavioral therapy tools –  to provide online support for members struggling with concerns such as depression, insomnia, stress and anxiety.

ON THE RECORD

"Based on Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies' relationships with these providers, data analytics and our experience, we believe those selected to be included in Blue HPN will improve health outcomes, efficiency and affordability for members," the Association said.
