Automating the care plan helps avoid burnout

While the EHR documents what has been done, automating lets physicians and the care team know what to do going forward.

Automating the preoperative process can save time for clinicians, who typically handle matters manually.

This saves time, which helps prevent burnout.

"It's the core of what we're doing," said Robbie Hughes, CEO and founder of Lumeon, which offers such a digital health solution. "We get rid of the chaos and the noise."

Automating a care plan avoids having clinicians chase down information, including tests. While the EHR documents what has been done, automating lets physicians and the care team know what the right thing to do is, going forward.

A care plan is created in real time, and people in the care team are tasked with what action they need to take.

The process is like a copilot for the clinical team, he said.

"It's the link between a clinician decision and what we do about it," he said. "There is so much in care delivery today that is well intended that falls apart at execution."

What's not being done is overriding physician judgement. Physicians are given information quickly, so they can make decisions. There's no repetitive data entry.

"What's left is the 20% at the top of their license," Hughes said.

For example, to prevent readmissions for heart failure, the single biggest factor is to get the patient back for a follow-up visit in seven days. Clinicians already know this, but automation takes care of the scheduling.

Most patients can be involved through mobile technology.

Productivity is boosted, Hughes said, but not by doing more.

"The idea is," Hughes said, "you can go in and say, we're going to give you one less thing to do."
