Health insurer Humana has hired industry veteran Dr. Sanjay Shetty to lead its healthcare services business CenterWell, the largest provider of senior-focused primary care, provider of home health services, and fourth largest pharmacy benefit manager in the U.S.

Shetty comes to Humana from Steward Health Care System, where he currently serves as president. In his new role, he will report to Humana president and CEO Bruce Broussard and will serve as a member of Humana's Management Team starting April 1.

The newly created role comes as Humana pushes to expand its healthcare services capabilities, saying it wants to strengthen its payer-agnostic portfolio and "integrate the clinical experience" for patients across the CenterWell platform. Shetty, Humana said, will help unite and integrate these services and day-to-day operations.

As president of Steward, Shetty leads day-to-day operations and strategy for the health system, which includes 39 hospitals, a large multispecialty medical group and an accountable care organization.

WHAT'S THE IMPACT?

Humana also announced that George Renaudin, senior vice president and president of Medicare, has been promoted to president of Medicare and Medicaid, effective immediately.

The insurer credited Renaudin with leading Humana's Medicare Advantage growth over the last two decades. The company recently raised its 2023 Medicare Advantage membership growth guidance for the second time due to higher-than-expected sales during the fall 2022 annual enrollment period.

Renaudin's expanded role will also include Humana's Medicaid business, which serves more than one million members nationally across Florida, Kentucky, Wisconsin, Illinois and South Carolina  and has added Ohio and Louisiana in 2023. In addition to leading Medicaid and Medicare, Renaudin will lead Humana's customer service organization, and health plan technology and transformation.

THE LARGER TREND

Last summer, Humana announced it was simplifying its organizational structure and paring itself down into two main units, Insurance Services and CenterWell.

The restructuring follows on the heels of other organizational changes. In April 2022, Humana signed a definitive agreement with private investment firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice to divest a majority interest in Humana's Kindred at Home subsidiary, KAH Hospice.

In June, the company said it was adding 14 states to its ongoing initiative to rebrand the home health division of Kindred at Home as CenterWell Home Health. KAH home health services have already begun transitioning to the CenterWell brand in a number of other states, with Phase 2 bringing the total up to 21 states overall.
