Upstate New York health systems Cayuga Health System and Arnot Health are seeking state regulatory approval to affiliate as members of a parent company.
Under the new structure, the new organization of five hospitals will oversee one billion dollars of medical services provided over a nine-county region.
Each system will remain intact. Pending approval, Dr. Martin Stallone, CEO of Cayuga Health System, will serve as the CEO of the parent company. Jonathan Lawrence, CEO of Arnot Health, will serve as executive vice president.
WHY THIS MATTERS
The health systems said they expect their collaboration to improve access to medical services in the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions while ensuring services are delivered in local communities.
The organizations' growing list of comprehensive services will continue to include emergency care, critical cardiac care, cancer care, acute care, labor and delivery and NICU care, outpatient physician care, outpatient and inpatient behavioral health services, substance use disorder rehabilitation and long-term care, in addition to home nursing, durable medical equipment and supplies, and emergency transportation.
Additional benefits of the affiliation include a commitment to continue to make capital improvements to facilities and ongoing investments in the healthcare workforce, the systems said. Both will collaborate to build the healthcare workforce through efforts in nursing, radiologic technology, medical school, physician assistant, graduate medical education and other professional training initiatives, they said.
The Cayuga Health Professions Learning Center will be expanded to link training pipelines with job opportunities throughout the parent company and beyond.
THE LARGER TREND
The health systems announced in April they were exploring a collaborative relationship.
Cayuga Health has two hospitals, Cayuga Medical Center and Schuyler Hospital, as well as a multispecialty group, Cayuga Medical Associates. It is clinically linked to Mayo Medical Laboratories, Rochester Regional Health for cardiac services, and the University of Rochester for neurosciences.
Arnot Health has three hospitals; Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira, St. Joseph's in Elmira and Ira Davenport Memorial Hospital in Bath, New York. It operates over 40 medical offices across the Southern Tier of New York and the Northern Tier of Pennsylvania.
ON THE RECORD
"As Cayuga Health grows and the landscape of healthcare changes, we are eager to find new ways to nurture and enhance community-based healthcare services," said Stallone. "Our study with Arnot Health uncovered innumerable ways a collaboration could improve the healthcare delivered across the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions. We look forward to moving into the next phase of this process with New York State."
