Donations to nonprofits up in 2013
More than $9B was donated to nonprofit healthcare institutions
Donations to nonprofit healthcare institutions in the U.S. jumped significantly in 2013, according to the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy.
The AHP’s Report on Giving, which will be released in full in November, said that philanthropic giving to U.S. nonprofit hospitals, medical centers, health systems and related facilities rose by $276 million last year to $9.2 billion over 2012 levels and $1.5 billion more than in 2009. The report also noted that donations in Canada rose $100 million higher than in 2012 to over $1.5 billion.
AHP’s annual giving report was conducted by independent research firm Association Research, Inc. Eighteen percent of the 242 U.S. facilities surveyed responded.
"Donor support is vital to continue the work of health care institutions that serve their communities," said AHP Board Chair William S. Littlejohn, chief executive officer and senior vice president at Sharp HealthCare Foundation in San Diego, in a press release.
According to AHP, hospitals and health systems investing in philanthropy saw a return on investment of $3.55 last year. The cost to raise a dollar was 28 cents.
