Actor Kirk Douglas and his wife, Anne, have given the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles $2.3 million to pay for a new surgical robot in the hospital’s department for surgical pediatric urology.

The gift will cover the cost for a da Vinci robot, the hospital announced, which helps surgeons to make smaller incisions, improves accuracy and provides 3-D imagery.

“This single piece of equipment will create more hope and better treatment outcomes for thousands of children suffering from a variety of issues that can be improved surgically,” said Richard D. Cordova, the hospital’s CEO, in a statement.

The hospital has had a robotics program since 2009 and has performed more than 400 successful surgeries.
