Healthcare mergers and acquisitions up in first quarter, report says

Hospital deals total $693 million in the quarter.

Healthcare deals totaled $104.7 billion in the first quarter, up 109 percent compared to the first quarter of 2014, according to preliminary estimates by Connecticut-based Irving Levin Associates.

Healthcare deals totaled $104.7 billion in the first quarter, up 109 percent compared to the first quarter of 2014, according to preliminary estimates by Connecticut-based Irving Levin Associates. The firm, which tracks healthcare M&A, said there were 346 deals across the various sectors of healthcare in the quarter.

Levin bases its estimates on disclosed prices.

Major pharmaceuticals deals in the quarter include Pfizer's $17 billion takeover of Hospira and Abbvie's $20 billion buy of Pharmacyclics.

On the hospitals side, the first quarter has seen 23 deals, according to Levin, totaling $693 million.
