The North Shore-LIJ health system on Monday said it plans to form a joint venture with Newport Health Solutions, a tech company that focuses on population and network management.

The announcement was sent after the two companies signed a letter of intent to collaborate, although formal and monetary terms of the partnership still need to be negotiated.

Under the joint venture, North Shore-LIJ, based in Great Neck, New York, would help fund further development of the Health Connect platform through its venture business. Newport's platform is already being used in LIJ's Lenox Hill Hospital, but under the deal it would also be installed at other LIJ facilities.

Newport describes its product as a population health management tool that can integrate with most electronic health records systems. Population health tools have become highly sought after recently as healthcare moves from a fee-for-service model of one that rewards, or penalizes, healthcare providers for their quality of care. That extends from intake, scheduling and treatment all the way through the billing process.

North Shore-LIJ, a large metropolitan system, has been steadily growing. It recently launched a health plan, CareConnect, and said it is in partnership with Maimonides Medical Center to expand into Brooklyn. In March, LIJ also announced that it would add the Peconic Bay Medical Center to its network, a hospital serving the tourist-heavy East End of Long Island.
