Montefiore Health System in New York will take full operational control of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, the healthcare provider announced on Thursday.

According to the announcement, Yeshiva University, which had run the college through a previous affiliation with Montefiore, will still manage academic oversight and issue all degrees.

The deal will align the existing staff of the medical school with Montefiore.

"This new agreement, which brings us even closer, will be the first step toward a more secure and sustainable future," said Montefiore CEO Steven M. Safyer in a statement.

The move is just the latest news of a health system taking on a medical school, something officials said is more important for these colleges since it gives them direct affiliation with a healthcare network.

"The new imperative in today's complex healthcare environment is to formally link this now world-class medical school and research institution to a world-class health system," said Richard Joel, president of Yeshiva University, in the statement.

The North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health system also recently tied itself to a medical school, backing the creation of the North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York.

Montefiore is one of the most respected systems in the metro New York area. It runs eight hospitals and one extended care facility for a total of 2,747 beds.
